If your existing external door is looking tired, damaged or outdated, you may be wondering if you need to replace the whole door and frame.
The good news is that you may only need to replace the door.
If the existing frame is in good condition, a new bespoke timber door can sometimes be made to fit the frame you already have.
Does the existing frame need to be checked?
Yes.
Before replacing just the door, the existing frame needs to be checked carefully.
It needs to be strong, sound and in reasonable condition. The frame also needs to be checked for its size, shape and position of the hinges and locks.
Even a small difference in measurements can make a big difference when fitting a new door.
Why keep the existing frame?
Keeping the existing frame can save you from having to remove a perfectly good frame.
It can also mean less work around the doorway. There may be less disruption to brickwork, plaster, decoration and other finishes around the door.
For some homes, replacing just the door can be a much simpler option.
What if the frame is old?
An old frame isn’t necessarily a problem.
A timber frame can remain perfectly usable for many years if it has been looked after and is still structurally sound.
However, if the frame is rotten, damaged, badly out of square or has other problems, it may be better to replace the frame at the same time as the door.
Can a new door be made to fit?
This is where a bespoke door can be useful.
Rather than buying a standard-sized door and hoping it fits, a bespoke door can be made to suit the existing opening and frame.
The door can also be made to your preferred size, style, timber, glazing and hardware.
At LSC Joinery, we can look at your existing door and frame and advise whether the frame can be kept or whether replacing both would be the better option.
