Solid hardwood doors are known for being strong, durable, and built to last. With good quality timber and the right care, they can easily last 30 to 50 years. In some cases they last even longer, especially when they are well maintained and fitted in a sheltered position.

The lifespan of a hardwood door depends on a few key things. The type of wood used makes a difference, with oak, iroko and sapele being some of the most common choices in the UK. These woods are dense and naturally resistant to wear, which helps them stand up well over time. Oak in particular is widely used because of its strength and long-term stability.

Build quality is just as important as the timber itself. A well-made door with properly joined sections and correctly dried timber will hold its shape much better over the years. Poorly made doors are more likely to warp, split or move as the seasons change.

Weather exposure also plays a big part. External doors deal with rain, sunlight, wind and frost throughout the year. A door that is fully exposed will naturally age faster than one that is protected by a porch or canopy. Moisture and UV light are the main causes of gradual wear, so some level of protection always helps extend its life.

The finish on the door is another key factor. Painted doors tend to last the longest because the surface is fully sealed, offering strong protection from moisture. Stained or oiled finishes can still look very good, but they usually need more regular maintenance to keep them effective. Once a finish starts to break down, the timber underneath becomes more vulnerable to movement and damage.

Maintenance makes a big difference to how long a door will last. Simple care such as keeping the finish in good condition, checking seals, and making sure water is not sitting around the frame all helps prevent long-term issues. Regular upkeep often adds many extra years to a door’s life.

In general, a poorly maintained hardwood door might last around 15 to 25 years. A well maintained one will often reach 30 to 50 years, and a high quality door in a protected position can last well beyond that. Internal hardwood doors can last even longer because they are not exposed to weather at all.

There are a few signs that a door may be reaching the end of its life. These include persistent sticking, noticeable warping, deep cracks in the timber, or rot developing especially at the bottom of the door. In some cases these issues can be repaired, so replacement is not always the first option.

Overall, solid hardwood doors are a long-term investment. While cheaper alternatives may need replacing within 10 to 20 years, a well made hardwood door can last for decades when it is looked after properly. The key is good quality timber, correct installation, and regular maintenance over time.
