When choosing a new solid oak exterior door, the locking system is an important part of the overall design.

There are several options available, from a traditional 5-lever sash lock to modern multi-point locking systems.

But which is right for your door?

5-lever sash lock

A traditional 5-lever sash lock is a popular choice for solid oak doors, particularly on older and traditional properties.

The lock is fitted into the edge of the door and is operated with a key. It also includes a latch, so the door can be opened and closed using the handle without locking it with the key each time.

It gives a traditional appearance and works particularly well with classic door furniture.

3-point locking

A 3-point locking system provides additional security by locking the door in three places rather than just one.

The locking points are normally positioned at the top, middle and bottom of the door.

This can be a good option for larger or heavier oak doors, as the additional locking points help hold the door securely into the frame.

Multi-point locking

A multi-point locking system takes security a step further.

The mechanism locks the door at several points around the frame, using a combination of hooks, bolts or deadbolts depending on the system selected.

All the locking points are operated from one handle and cylinder, making the system simple to use.

Multi-point locking can be particularly useful on larger exterior doors, French doors and properties where additional security is important.

Which is best for an oak door?

There isn’t one locking system that suits every door.

A 5-lever sash lock is a good choice if you want a traditional appearance and straightforward locking.

A 3-point or multi-point system gives you additional locking points and can be a better choice for larger doors or where increased security is a priority.

The cylinder is also important. Choosing a good-quality high-security cylinder can provide additional protection and should be considered alongside the main locking mechanism.

The whole door matters

The locking system is only one part of a secure exterior door.

The strength of the solid oak door, frame, hinges, cylinder, keeps and fixings all play a part.
